The heart behind Blu the Black Kat

Blu the Black Kat began in the quiet, intentional moments of family life.

Over the past few years, Ashley-Kate made a deeply intentional decision to slow down, be more present, and spend uninterrupted time with her daughter, Nastassia. In those ordinary but sacred moments — reading together at home, visiting the local library, and watching her daughter fall in love with stories — something beautiful began to take shape.

Books had become such a meaningful part of their family rhythm. Some of the sweetest memories were not found in big milestones, but in the simple act of sitting side by side and opening a story together. Even at the local library, those moments stood out. Librarians took notice, and before long, the joy of reading began reaching beyond their own home and into the lives of other children too.

But alongside that love for books came a growing awareness: countless children’s stories felt noisy, confusing, shallow, or simply not safe for little hearts and minds. Ashley-Kate and her husband, Chris, cared deeply about raising their daughter with intention — with stories, conversations, and values that were gentle, trustworthy, and rooted in truth.

So what began as a small story for their daughter became something much more meaningful.

Together, Ashley-Kate, Chris, and Nastassia created Blu the Black Kat — a family-centered children’s book series written with faith, kindness, peace, and truth at its core.
